Reading Club

This is a list of the books read by your classmates, with their comments. I hope you find it useful to choose the next book you'd like to read:

-"The Piano", by Rosemary Border is one of the books which Germán (NB2-C) read. Although he forgot to rate it, he says that he thought it was a beautiful story about how a poor child who works in a farm becomes a famous pianist.
-"The Double Bass Mystery", by Jeremy Harmer, was read by Mª del Mar (NB2-C), who thought it was GOOD. It is a mystery book about a musical instrument which gets lost in Barcelona. There is also a murder. Mª del Mar is a musician herself, that's why she likes reading books about musicians. She particularly likes the love story between Penny and the police inspector.
-"The Nightmare Before Christmas", based on a story by Tim Burton, was rated GOOD by Antonio (NB2-C). This is a story about Halloween characters who pretend to be Christmas character. Can you imagine the mess? Antonio likes the magical world created by the author, and he thinks the story is interesting and well-developed.
-"Short Stories", by Oscar Wilde was read by Rebeca (NB2-C). She thought it was a GOOD book, with three entertaining stories which are not connected to each other. According to her, this book is easy to read. She loves the end of the second story.
-"Murder at Murlock Hall", is a murder story which Mª Dolores (NB2-C) read. It's about a rich man with a lot of enemies who gets killed. She likes the suspense of the story. She says she has learnt a lot of vocabulary. So, she thought it was GOOD.
-"The Importance of Being Earnest", by Oscar Wilde, was read by Nony (NB2-C) is about two gentlemen of Victorian society who don't want to be "earnest" in life. Funnily, the name of one of the characters is "Ernest", which sounds the same as the adjective in the title, which means "serious". She thought the book was EXCELLENT, and she loved both the message in it and the unexpected end. However, Inmaculada (NB2-C) thought it was just READABLE. She says it's a comedy, and so it's quite funny.
- "The Death of Karen Silkwood", by Joyce Hannam, was read by Emilio (NB2-C), who thought it was GOOD. This is the story of a woman who worked for a nuclear factory in Oklahoma, and how she found out about the dangers of radioactivity. Germán also read it, and he thought it was only READABLE. (NB2-C) He says that the story is not very interesting, and he'll choose different topics to read about in the future. He complains that "the story never ends". Nony has also read this true story. She thought it was a GOOD book: she found the story interesting, because it's true and because it talks about an important topic.
- "Becoming Jane", by Sarah Willians, was read by Inmaculada (NB2-C). The book is Jane Austen's biography. Jane Austen is a famous writer, she is the author of "Sense and Sensibility " and " Pride and Perjudice".This is READABLE book. Inmaculada thinks Jane is a clever, honest and brave person.
- "The Mysterious Island", by Jules Verne, was read by Rosa (NB2-C). She thought it was GOOD. It is a pirate story. She learnt words related to the sea, and practised a lot of verbs in the past.
- "The Love of a King", by Peter Dainty, was read by Mª Teresa (NB2-C). She thought it was GOOD. It tells the romantic story of the British King Edward VII, who renounced the throne for love. She loved the king's strong personality. Fina (NB2-B) also read this book, and found it GOOD. She thinks it's an interesting love story. Reading this book she learnt that "love is the most important thing in the world". She recommends reading it because it has easy sentences.
- "Pirates of the Caribbean" was read by Isabel (NB2-B). She thought it was GOOD. It is a pirate story, based on the famous film. She learned all the pirate vocabulary. Patricio (NB2-B) also read this book, but he found it BORING. He thinks that pirates have "strange personalities", he gets nervous when he reads about them. Mª Teresa (NB2-C) read this one too, and she found it GOOD. She particularly liked reading about the pirates' adventures and how they always win their fights.
- "Death in the Freezer", by Tim Vicary, was read by Miguel Ángel (NB2-B), who thought it was READABLE. It is about a young woman who murders her brother, whom she hates, and then a scientist freezes him. He found the book easy to read, and full of interesting vocabulary. It is full of suspense.
- "Dracula", by Bram Stoker, was read by Cristina (NB2-B). She thought it was EXCELLENT. She loves horror stories, and she found this one was very entertaining. She loves the vocabulary related to vampire "symptoms". Beatriz (NB2-B) also read it -but she didn't rate it :(. She says she particularly liked the end -although she had already seen the movie. Jesús (NB2-C) also read this book. He rated the book GOOD, and he says that the descriptions are very realistic and his narration makes the story interesting to read from beginning to end. Miriam Gálvez (NB2-C) also read this popular book, and she particularly liked one of the character, Jonathan's wife, Lucy.
- "Notting Hill", by Richard Curtis, was read by Lyudmyla (NB2-B). She thought it was EXCELLENT. It is both romantic and funny. She recommends it because she likes the style and because it is easy to read.
-"The Ghost of Genny Castle", by John Escott, was read by Marian (NB2-C). It's a story about castles, ghosts and a mysterious cat. She rates the book READABLE, and she likes the mystery in the book. Emilio (NB2-C), who read it too, also found it READABLE, and he says he particularly liked the girl's curiousity and courage.
- "The Street Lawyer", by John Grisham, was read by Sayo (NB2-C), who thought it was a GOOD book. It tells the story of a good lawyer, who helps poor people. She particularly liked the lawyer's solidarity and braveness.
- "Three Short Stories of Sherlock Holmes", by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, was read by Jesús (NB2-C). As the title "suggests", there are three stories, of which the second has to do with a teacher who loses her exam paper on the day before the exam. What a nightmare! He liked the way the stories are narrated, in a simple way. Another good thing about this book is that there are 3 different short stories, which don't take a long time to read. However, he only thought it was READABLE. Mª Teresa (NB2-C) read this book as well, and she rated it GOOD. She loves the way Holmes always solves the cases. She recommends the third case, which has a surprising ending. Nony (NB2-C) read it too. She rated it GOOD and she likes it because she has always liked detective novels.
